This summer we are staging a hilarious, outdoor adaptation of Aristophanes’ comedy from 411 BC: Thesmophoria. The play is set at an annual festival that actually took place in ancient Athens and brought together women and queer people in worship of Demeter, goddess of agriculture and fertility, and her daughter Persephone. Ever-relevant over 2000 years later, in the play the poet Euripides sends his brother-in-law in women’s clothes to spy on the festivities, frightened that the women are plotting to kill him for how he misrepresents them in his work.
With an ensemble of 10 professional female/non-binary performers, our 50-minute re-write will tour parks and gardens across Berlin in July and August. The show will be on a pay-what-you-can basis and both performers and audience will be required to keep a physical distance of 1.5 meters. These times are tough and uncertain for all of us, particularly female/queer/non-binary freelancers. So, what better way to reunite artists and audiences than through some feminist comedy in the great outdoors? As the saying goes, the shortest distance between two people is laughter!
